Taiwanese-American Joseph Hu is one of America's important character tenors, sought after for roles such as Goro in Madama Butterfly, both Pang and Pong in Turandot, Steuermann in Der fliegende Holländer. Following a recent performance of Madama Butterfly with San Diego Opera, Mr. Hu garnered critical acclaim as "a first-rate comprimario tenor." in 2009 he added the role of Mime to his repertoire, which he covered for Seattle Opera, in both Das Rheingold and Siegfried as part of Wagner? Ring Cycle.
Last season's engagements included a reprisal of the role of Goro in Madama Butterfly with San Diego Opera and Toledo Opera, Eisslinger in Die Meistersinger with San Francisco Opera.
This season, Mr. Hu will perform as Mime in Das Rheingold at National Taichung Theater, Goro in Madama Butterfly at Palm Beach Opera, and Pong in Turandot at Pittsburgh Opera, Atlanta Opera and Vancouver Opera.
2013 / 2014 he performs Mime and Loge in Der Ring with Minnesota Concert Opera, Steuermann in Der Fliegende Holländer with Bangkok Opera, Judge in Un Ballo in maschera with San Diego Opera.
During the 2009 / 2010 season, Mr. Hu returned to San Diego Opera in his sixteenth season with the company as Abdallo in Nabucco and Gaston in La Traviata. He also made his debut with Vancouver Opera as Goro in Madama Butterfly.
